Kerron replaces Shelly |
Kerron Stewart, the 2008 Olympics 200 metres bronze medalist, has been chosen to replace Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce in the half-lap sprint at the Adidas Grand Prix Diamond League meeting in New York this weekend.
Organisers revealed on Monday that Fraser-Pryce, who won three gold medals at the IAAF World Athletic Championships in Moscow last year, had withdrawn from the meet because of an injury.
In a statement released on social media, Fraser-Pryce confirmed that she would not be taking part at the meet set for Icahn Stadium on Randall's Island.
"Yes, I can confirm I will not be competing in the adidas meet. I don't like disappointing fans, but like you all agree, I cannot run them all when I'm not at my best. My apologies to the meet organisers," the statement said.
The organisers went on a frantic search for a replacement and announced yesterday that Stewart has been chosen. Stewart, 30, who has a personal best of 21.99 seconds, will take on a strong field that will include NCAA Champion Kimberlyn Duncan, Bianca Knight, as well as 400-metre specialist Natasha Hastings. Also in the field are Bahamian sprint talent Shaunae Miller, Anneisha McLaughlin, Shalonda Solomon and Tiffany Townsend.
