To Mom With Love welcomes R&B star

He ruled the R&B charts from the mid-1980s to the early 1990s with a long string of hits.

ImageRhythm and blues singer Glenn Jones is looking forward to his second performance in Jamaica at the To Mom With Love concert on Sunday, May 11.

The event, promoted by Golden Promotions, will see Jones performing hits such as We've Only Just Begun, All I Need to Know, Show Me, Bring Back Your Love, Stay, Here I Go Again (his only No. 1 R&B single in the United States), Giving Myself to You and Hooked on Your Love.

"When my agent called me and said he had a show for me in Jamaica, right away, I said yes. I've heard that my songs are loved by the people of Jamaica, so I will be singing the records and the hits and interacting with the fans," Jones explained in an interview last week.

The 52-year-old Jones is originally from Jacksonville, Florida. He started his career as a gospel singer, working and recording with the Florida-based gospel group The Modulations, before managing a successful transition to R&B.

After leaving the group, Jones teamed with Norman Connors in 1980 for the track Melancholy Fire which was featured on Connors' album Take it to the Limit. The track reached No. 20 on the Billboard R&B chart.

Jones toured with Connors and then in 1983 signed a deal with RCA Records. That year, the five-track mini-album Everybody Loves a Winner was released and scored the top-30 R&B single, I Am Somebody.

His first full-length album, Finesse, was released in 1984 and established Jones as a force in the R&B industry.

His last album for RCA was Take It from Me (1986) which had its title track featured in the movie Youngblood. To date, he has released 12 studio albums.

After signing with Jive Records in 1987, Jones scored a big hit with We've Only Just Begun which reached No. 2 on the Billboard R&B chart. The track was the lead single off his self-titled album.

In 1992, Jones signed with Atlantic Records and scored the hit single Here I Go Again, which was taken from the album of the same name.

Jones released the album It's Time in 1998 and Feels Good (Peak Records) in 2002.

In 2006, Jones released Forever: Timeless R&B Classics on Shanties Records.

Jones breathed new life into a Bette Midler song, All I Need to Know, in 1987, which has become one of his biggest hits here in Jamaica. Two years later, the song was reworked by Linda Ronstadt and Aaron Neville and retitled Don't Know Much, which became a massive pop hit.

To Mom With Love is scheduled for the LIME Golf Academy on Sunday, May 11. Jones will share stage with the likes of 1970s pop rock band Dr Hook, 1980s rhythm and blues singer Dorothy Moore, as well as local acts Karen Smith, Gem Myers, Pat Kelly, Errol Dunkley, K-Cuneal, and Patrick Bubo.
