We celebrate Jamaica's heritage this month, but not everyone can make it to the various functions, and so expressing our appreciation of and celebrating our heritage may be done through fashion. But forget the bandana for the main piece, keep your wardrobe basics and accessorise with cultural or culturally inspired threads.
Fortunately we don't have to travel far to purchase crafts because most resorts and cities have craft villages or tourist stores. Even Constant Spring Road in Kingston has sidewalk vendors selling cultural pieces that would work well with your main wardrobe items. I've also found locally made accessories at craft events, particularly those held in December.
And if you can't find cultural pieces, you can always go for mainstream items that are inspired by our culture, or that are based on the colours we associate with our heritage. These may be investment buys, or inexpensive costume jewellery, such as those found in Joseph's, Central Plaza.
