The proposed permanent campus facility is to be sited on 25 acres of land at Irwin, St. James. The university has three other campuses in Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados and in Kingston. Speaking late last year UWI’s Professor Gordon Shirley indicated that the campus will be offering full three-year degree programmes from its inception, and will be increasing its offerings with time. One Montego Bay resident interviewed described the proposed opening of the Western Jamaica Campus as an idea whose time had come. She said she graduated from high school three years ago and wanted to pursue tertiary education. However she could not think of relocating to St. Andrew because of the failing health of her mother. Now she feels she has been give a chance to further her studies. The WCJ has now started accepting applications for intake for the first academic term, which begins late August 2008. Some of the programmes being offered are : B.A. media and Communications (Public Relations specialization) B.Sc. Hospitality and Tourism B.Sc. Management Information Systems B.Sc. Banking and Finance B.Sc. Management Studies (General and Accounting specializations) The WCJ is promising to offer a rounded and balanced experience to its students and will create programmes and activities designed to foster the growth the development of the whole person.
