UK Charity Helps Women's Centre PDF Print E-mail

The UK based Jamaica Society of Leeds recently presented a cheque valued at $250,000, (£2,150)  to the Women’s Centre of Jamaica Foundation (WCJF).

The donation will go into the foundation’s welfare fund, which will assist in paying the fees of participants taking Caribbean Examination Council tests this year, as well as graduates of the programmes, who are pursuing tertiary studies

The donation was handed over by Jamaica’s High Commissioner to London, Burchell Whiteman and wife Jolene, to WCJF Director, Beryl Weir, at the foundation’s offices in St. Andrew. Mr. Whiteman, in his remarks, said that the donation was made at the request of the High Commission and represented proceeds from the charity’s annual fundraiser. He said that the Women’s Centre Foundation is deserving of the contribution, as it “has done tremendously good work for Jamaican women over the years.”

The foundation, he said, “has an excellent record of service to young people, a high record of success in bringing young women back on track in terms of their own personal development, academic success, professional success, and family success.”

Mrs. Whiteman noted that “right across Britain, there are over 100 groups of Jamaicans, who are doing some wonderful things” in terms of charity work and promised to share information about the foundation’s welfare programme with these charities.

Several graduates who have completed their secondary level education,  and some who have been accepted to various universities, colleges and nursing institutions, require assistance. In the majority of cases, they are not able to access student loan based on the fact that they need somebody to stand as guarantor. Last year, the foundation helped to pay the tuition fees for five students, who were attending teachers colleges, while three received similar benefits in 2006.
