Press Association of Jamaica Celebrates 65 PDF Print E-mail

The oldest press association in the English-speaking Caribbean, the Press Association of Jamaica (PAJ) has reached a landmark 65 years old. Journalists from all walks of Jamaican media turned out to recognise this achievement at the launch of the PAJ's 65th Anniversary Celebrations, which took place at their East Avenue headquarters in Kingston recently.

PAJ President, Desmond Richards, did a brief review of changes in Jamaican media, remembering a time when some persons questioned if Jamaican media had become polarised. He also spoke of the security of journalists, noting that the risks associated with the profession have increased significantly. “Times have changed,” Richards said, urging journalists to be more aware of their own safety, but also to remain committed to their task, which has become more difficult and challenging.

Richards affirmed his commitment to ensuring that the PAJ stays relevant, and mentioned plans to redesign their annual journalism awards as part of this effort. He noted that the prizes will have to be recategorised to include the plethora of new media in the island. “It's not just the Gleaner and RJR anymore,” he commented.

Current PAJ Secretary, and Chairman for the evening's program, Byron Buckley, spoke of plans to upgrade the PAJ's antiquated headquarters. He also expounded on the 65th Anniversary celebrations, which will continue for the rest of the year. There will be monthly Frenzy Fridays at the bar here at our headquarters,” Buckley noted. “And at the end, there will be a special 65th Anniversary Magazine that will be like a souvenir.

Information Minister, Olivia Grange, encouraged the PAJ to get more young people into the fold, emphasising the need to ensure the legacy of excellence continues. She commended the PAJ for celebrating 65 years, and lauded the work which the media has done to keep the Jamaican public informed, stating that “the PAJ has done the nation and their profession proud.” Joking, she added, “When they decide to put whoever else in my place, I will come and join you guys, how about that?”

As part of the 65th Anniversary celebrations, the PAJ also plans to host special events to honour their veteran members. Later in the year, they will also launch their website and conduct a media exposition, along with special media forums. Plans are also in place to regularly publish the PAJ Advocate, and to celebrate PAJ Week in November. The PAJ has been in existence since July 2, 1943.
