Jamaica To Host Inaugural Track And Field Grand Prix PDF Print E-mail

As Jamaica’s Racers Track Club burnishes its image and its vision as the “Number One Track Club in the World,” the Hon. Glen Mills, OJ, President of the Club, welcomes the opportunity to host the inaugural Racers Grand Prix, scheduled to be held at the National Stadium on June 11, 2016.

“The Grand Prix will host more than 100 athletes from some ten countries, and the best sprinters and field athletes in the world will grace our national stadium,” he said, recently. “However, prior to the meet, a special Reception, to communicate the Racer’s vision and highlight the Grand Prix, will be sponsored by the JN Group at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel, on May 1.

Earl Jarrett, general manager of the Jamaica National Building Society (JNBS), applauded the Hon. Glen Mills and Racers Track Club for the ongoing contribution to maintaining the Jamaican image as: “The Sprint Capital of the World,” and welcomed the concept for the Grand Prix.

“Our sponsorship of the Grand Prix; and hosting of the reception on May 1, is part of our continuing focus to support young athletes and to honour their achievements,” Mr Jarrett stated, “as we anticipate that they will be among future Jamaican athletes who will maintain the trail-blazing standard set by others, some of whom will retire after the 2016 Olympics in Brazil.”

He pointed out that the Reception and Silent Auction at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel, will celebrate the performance of Racers Track Club athletes, share the vision of the Track Club; and, encourage others to support the Club, financially. “Since Jamaica first emerged on the Olympic scene, there has been enormous support of the athletic movement in Jamaica, and Jamaica National sees our support as a way to further support athletics and what it has done for Jamaica”.

The reception will feature a Racers Track Club “Museum,” displaying sports memorabilia, Olympic and World Championship medals, photographs; as well as, other items for a Silent Auction.  Many athletes, including the Hon. Usain Bolt, OJ, have committed sports items for display in the museum; and, some of these items will be on sale, in the silent auction.

“Our athletes are in need of your financial support,” the Hon. Glen Mills added.   “Since the launch of the Racers Club in 2008, our country has experienced unprecedented growth and development of our Jamaican athletes.  Most of all, our athletes no longer need to leave our shores to be coached to world-class standards.”

Mr Mills pointed out that, “An interesting footnote to the development of athletes in Jamaica, is the fact that: today, with the success of our athletes and track clubs, more athletes from other countries are electing to train in Jamaica, which has so many natural advantages; hence, the need to lend conscious support.”

Members of the public are invited to visit: www.ISupportJamaica.com to make their own donations, in support of the Racers Track Club; and assist more young athletes to realise their full potential..  A special appeal is being made to members of the Jamaican Diaspora to support athletics in Jamaica through IsupportJamaica, the crowd-funding portal developed by JNBS.  The Racers’ crowd-funding appeal is being finalised and will be placed on the ISupport Jamaica website after the May 1 reception.
