Strong performances at Shaggy and Friends PDF Print E-mail

The 2016 Shaggy and Friends charity concert on the lawns of Jamaica House, Hope Road, St Andrew, concluded on Saturday night with thrilling performances from several of the billed acts. Among the artistes who gave strong performances were Ding Dong, Sean Kingston, Shaggy and Rayvon, Ashanti, Popcaan and R. City.

Also on the line-up were Bugle, Beenie Man, Ity and Fancy Cat, En Vogue, Tanto Metro and Devonte, Omi and Kevin Downswell. All proceeds from the event will be donated to the Bustamante Hospital For Children.

Stalwarts of the 1990s, singer Nadine Sutherland and deejay Terror Fabulous, were perhaps the most intimate with the audience and took patrons on a trip down memory lane with a slew of hits.

Terror Fabulous, who has been troubled with illness over the years, is a rare act to catch in action, although he was a part of the combination performances at Sting 2015 on Boxing Day. Patrons who turned out to the charity event got a chance to see the man behind hits like Gangster's Anthem and Number 2, among others.

Ushered on by Super Beagle, Terror Fabulous entered the stage looking a tad underdressed, sporting a pair of jeans, black shoes and a Shaggy and Friends promotional T-shirt.

His long hiatus from the mainstream raised questions about who was performing at that point in the show. However, as Terror Fabulous deejayed the first line of Jah Works, patrons began to chant the lyrics, many finally realising that the artiste was none other than the musical Terror.

Fabulous followed with Drop It Cool, among other songs, before he was joined by longtime collaborator Nadine Sutherland. It was obvious at intervals that their chemistry on stage had somewhat depleted. Nevertheless, they performed Anything For You (they are among the performers on the multi-artiste recording) and their duet Action as patrons sang along.

Sutherland also did herself justice, performing a few hits of her own. Dressed in knee high boots, black stockings and shorts jumpsuit, the self-proclaimed cougar showed patrons that she is still able to dance, control her breathing and deliver her lines with accuracy.

By the time, En Vogue took the stage, a relatively tired audience failed to respond to even some of the group's biggest hits. Nonetheless, the ladies sang and impressed loyal fans with their seemingly timeless vocals. They also saved the best for last, making their exit with the popular single Don't Waste Your Time.

Gospel artiste Kevin Downswell came next and tried his best to bring back some real energy to the crowd. His set, especially the popular Stronger, was received relatively well.

Popcaan delivered a clean set and had patrons chanting lines from Way Up and Give Thanks, among others. His performance with the live band also showed tremendous growth.

The event was attended by several well-known persons, such as Captain Horace Burrell, Asafa Powell, Karrueche Tran and a slew of politicians.
