No word of any Jamaicans in quake-hit Nepal PDF Print E-mail

The Government says it is awaiting a response from the Jamaican Embassy in Beijing, China, on whether there were any Jamaicans living in Nepal, hit by a massive quake on the weekend.

The Asian country was on Saturday hit by a massive 7.8 earthquake, killing more than 2,500 people.

China, located to the north of Nepal, is the closest country where a Jamaican embassy is situated.

Head of the public relations and media unit at the Foreign Affairs Ministry, Ann Margaret Lim, says she does not yet have any information from the ambassador, Ralph Thomas.

She adds that the Government would not be responsible for Jamaican citizens in Nepal unless they were sent there by the Government.

However, referencing the 2011 Japan earthquake, Lim said that the Government may facilitate the safe return of persons who may be affected.

Britain, Australia, New Zealand, and other countries are trying to determine whether any of their nationals have been affected by the quake.
