Five Million Dollar Injection For Kingston YMCA

The Kingston YMCA is set to receive five million dollars from the Jamaican government, to shore up its ability to continue rescue people and help them transform their lives.

The announcement of the five million dollar injection was made recently by Prime Minister Bruce Golding at the 88^th anniversary banquet of the Kingston YMCA last night.

He paid special tribute to the YMCA’s Administrator and General Secretary, Sarah Newland-Martin, whom he noted had given her life to the cause of the YMCA. Prime Minister Golding said the YMCA had made an enormous achievement by simply surviving this long and continuing the work to which it has always been so passionately committed.

He noted that since the 1920’s when the YMCA was just formed, it has maintained its tradition of rescuing lives. Several Jamaicans, Mr. Golding added, who have made significant contributions to society, have benefitted and were set on the right path by the work of the YMCA. He paid tribute to those who have tirelessly continued the tradition of the YMCA and have groomed many young persons, some of whom will carry on their work.

Having mentioned the fact that too many organisations like the YMCA, which are doing good work, struggle to survive, he commended the companies which have given support and urged others to get on board as a part of their investment in Jamaica. Some of the companies and individuals giving support over the years include Jamaica National Building Society, Tank Weld, J.H Dunstan & Associates, WB Trophies, Burger King, West Indies Alumina Company, Rev C. Evans- Bailey and the Rev Canon Weevil Gordon. A special honouree, Dr Horace Fisher was recognised by the YMCA’s General Secretary, Sarah Newland-Martin. He was presented with his award by Prime Minister Golding.
