Bronze medal for Sunshine Girls at Commonwealth Games PDF Print E-mail

Jamaica’s senior national netballers – dubbed the “Sunshine Girls,” placed third and took the bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games on Sunday. Going up against England in the third place play-off, the Jamaicans won 52-48.

The Jamaicans trailed 11-13 at the end of the first quarter, but hauled themselves back into the lead by one goal at half time.

Things were even at 37-37 after the third quarter, but while the “Roses” faded, the “Sunshine Girls produced their best in the final quarter, outscoring the opponents 15-11, to win their first Commonwealth Games medal since 2002.

The significance of this bronze medal went beyond its importance to the netballers, as it took Jamaica’s final medal tally at the 2014 Commonwealth Games to 22 (comprising 10 gold, four silver, and eight bronze) and equaling the country's best medal haul in Commonwealth Games history.

There were three non track and field medals among the 22 - Alia Atkinson's silver and bronze for swimming and the bronze for netball.
