Jamaica lands three more gold at Commonwealth Games PDF Print E-mail

Stephenie-Ann McPherson led the charge for a Jamaican sweep of the medals in the women’s 400 metres at the 20th Commonwealth Games.

This came less than an hour after Kimberley Williams cut the sand at 14.21 metres to win the triple Jump, while Andrew Riley clocked 13.32 to take gold in the 110m hurdles.

McPherson, the fourth place finisher at the 2013 Moscow World Championships, timed her race to perfection producing a late burst in the last 50 metres to overhaul compatriot Novlene Williams-Mills to take gold in 50.67secs. Williams-Mills held for silver in 50.86, while Christine Day out leaned Amantle Monsho at the finish line for the bronze in 51.09 seconds.

McPherson joined Marilyn Fay Neufville from Edinburgh 1970 and Sandie Richards from Kuala Lumpur     in 1998 as Jamaican women to take Commonwealth 400m gold.

Jamaica’s medal tally now stands at 12, consisting of five gold, three silver and four bronze.
