A Police Museum, showcasing the history and culture of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) will open on Tuesday, November 26, at the training branch at Twickenham Park, St. Catherine.

The opening of the museum is part of activities to mark Police Week from November 24 to 30.

Police Sergeant and Member of the Secretariat for the week of events, Sergeant Kimisha Grindley, told JIS News that the idea for the museum came out of a study conducted by Assistant Commissioner for Training, Bishop Dr. Gary Welsh, on the history and culture of the JCF.

“Valuable artefacts were sourced and the decision was taken to house them at the library at the training branch so that persons can view them and also for the JCF to preserve these artefacts,” she informed.

Police Week will be observed under the theme: ‘Enlightened by our past, Enriching The Present, Envisioning The Future’.

Members of the JCF will use the occasion to renew and recommit to the partnership it shares with the public as it celebrates its 146th anniversary.

Sergeant Grindley told JIS News that the police will seek to increase interaction with citizens and remind them of the JCF’s purpose, which is to serve and protect. The JCF will also solicit the opinion of the public on how they can improve their services.

“In previous years, Police Week was filled with parades and displays. This year, our approach is to increase public interaction, hence the incorporation of communities, schools, the business community as well as past members of the force,” Sergeant Grindley said.

The week will begin with the Annual Commemorative and Memorial Church Service at East Queen’s Street Baptist Church and an activity is planned for each day in all police divisions across the island.

The celebrations will also feature a week-long recruitment blitz. This, Sergeant Grindley shared, will enable persons, who have applied to the JCF to get an update on the status of their application. Persons, who have applied may call the JCF at 283- 2151/ 984-3858.

On Wednesday, November 27, Police Commissioner, Owen Ellington’s message will be read in schools across the island by uniformed officers and one student will be given the opportunity to be ‘Commissioner for a day’.

Commissioner Ellington will also deliver a lecture on the “Economic Value of Effective Policing” to members of the business community later that afternoon.

Sergeant Grindley informed that Western Jamaica will be treated to a concert and exhibition, which will be held in Falmouth on Friday, November 29.

Police Week 2013 will culminate with a homecoming and barbeque at the training complex and members of the public are invited.
