The 26-year-old set a world leading time of 10.71 seconds for a commanding win which followed hot on the heels of compatriot Usain Bolt who took the men's title on Sunday.

Murielle Ahoure was second in 10.93 to give Ivory Coast its first world championship medal and she became the first African woman to finish on the podium in a sprint.

Defending world champion Carmelita Jeter of the U.S. was third in 10.94.

From the moment twice Olympic champion Fraser-Pryce shot out of the blocks there was only going to be one winner.

"I had my obstacles," Fraser-Pryce said. " I started to feel pain underneath my left butt cheek. It was really hurting but I knew what I worked for. I just came out here and I executed my race. I wasn't focused on anyone else. It was all about execution."

Also world champion in 2009, the Jamaican was never headed and her rivals were left watching the soles of her bright pink spikes and matching hair extensions as she powered to the line.

Dai Greene made it through to the semi-finals of the 400m hurdles despite struggling in the heat as he bids to retain his world title in Moscow.

It has been a year punctuated with injury and illness for Greene, 27, but he managed to finish fifth in his heat in 49.79 seconds.

The time itself would have seen Greene having to rely on qualifying as a fastest loser, but he was bumped up to fourth after Puerto Rico's Eric Alejandro was disqualified.

Greene is joined in the semi-finals by Brits Rhys Williams, who finished fourth in his heat in 49.85s, and Seb Rodgers, who was fifth in his heat in 49.66s.

British champion Perri Shakes-Drayton managed to set the fastest qualifying time in the women's event with 54.42s.

Heading into the semi-finals, Eilidh Child is fourth fastest after coming second in her heat in 55.17s. Meghan Beesley, 23, was the third Briton to qualify, also finishing second in her opening race.

Katarina Johnson-Thompson is in fourth place after two events of the heptathlon. She ran 13.49s in the 100m hurdles, a time just one-hundredth of a second off her PB, and cleared 1.83m in the high jump.
