Parchment hurdles national record PDF Print E-mail

HANSLE PARCHMENT established a new national record, as he clocked a world leading 13.05 seconds to win the men's 110 metres hurdles at the Prefontaine Classic Diamond League Athletics meeting in Eugene, Oregon, Saturday.

The University of the West Indies student significantly lowered the Jamaican standard he had made his own at last year's summer Olympics in London, when he clocked 13.12 to win the bronze medal behind Americans Aries Merritt and runner-up Jason Richardson.

The latter was also in the field yesterday, but his 13.45 clocking was only good for last in the eight-man field.

Cuba's Orlando Ortega ran a personal best 13.08 to claim second ahead of largely accomplished American, David Oliver, who placed third in 13.10.

Jamaica's Andrew Riley also competed in the race, placing fifth in a season best 13.20.

Parchment's victory numbered among three for Jamaica, which captured two of the three sprint events on the card.

Women's 100m clash

One, the women's 100, attracted a lot of interest in the Caribbean island that has laid claim to being the sprint capital in athletics, because two of its biggest stars - multiple Olympic and World Championship medallists Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and Veronica Campbell-Brown - were going head-to-head.

The ever-smiling Fraser-Pryce, the two-time Olympic champion, was victorious in a fast 10.71 seconds.

However, the time was not officially recognised as a season best because the +2.2 metres per second wind reading was above the 2.0 allowable limit.

Campbell-Brown was third in 10.78, as Nigeria's Blessing Okagbare, who clocked 10.75, sandwiched the Jamaicans.

A third Jamaica runner, Kerron Stewart, was fourth in 10.97, while likeable American Allyson Felix, the Olympic 200m champion, was seventh in 11.07.

The other Jamaican winner, Nickel Ashmeade, led a one-three finish for the black, gold and green standard bearers in the men's 200.

Ashmeade clocked 20.14 seconds to head off the United States' Walter Dix (20.16) and compatriot Jason Young, who placed third in 20.20.

Jamaica's female representatives Novlene Williams-Mills and Kaliese Spencer claimed third in the respective flat 400 and 400 hurdles events.

But their performances were not of an equal standard in the men's marquee 100, thus Nesta Carter (10.03 for fourth)and Kemar Bailey Cole (10.24 for eighth) placed outside the top three.

American Justin Gatlin won in a wind-aided (+2.6mps) 9.88 ahead of his countrymen, Mike Rodgers (9.94) and Ryan Bailey (10.00).

Montsho takes 400m

In the longest sprint, Botswana's Amantle Montsho won the women's 400 in 50.01 ahead of the US' Francena McCorory (50.37), while Williams-Mills claimed third in 51.14.

Fellow Jamaicans Stephenie McPherson, in her Grand Prix debut, placed fifth in 51.35, while Shericka Williams ended seventh in 52.22.

The United States' Sanya Richards-Ross, who was born in Jamaica, placed eighth and last in 53.77.

In the 400 hurdles, the Czech Republic's Zuzana Hejnova ran a world leading 53.70 to beat the field by a city block, with American Georganne Moline placing second in 54.75, while Spencer took third in 55.03.

The United States' Lashawn Merritt turned the form on Grenada's wonder boy Kirani James to win the men's 400 in a season best 44.32. James, the Olympic champion, placed second in 44.39 ahead of his compatriot, Tony McQuay (45.31).
