McCook remembered at Gibson Relays PDF Print E-mail

A moment of silence and black armbands on the sleeves of the organisers, formed part of the opening Ceremony, as organisers of the 37th Gibson Relays paid tribute to one of its founding fathers, Neville ‘Teddy’ McCook.

The celebrated administrator passed away on February 11, after a prolonged illness, bringing to an end, a life dedicated to the development of track and field both in jamaica and across the region and world.

McCook, up to his death, was the president of the North America, Central America and Caribbean area and also served on the IAAF as a Council Member as well as secretary general of the Jamaica Olympic Association.

“No tribute can be too great for ‘Teddy’,” said Rainford Wilks, the man who replaced McCook two years ago, as chairman of the Organising Committee. “We pledge to continue the legacy by maintaining and improving the relays to the very best of our abilities.”

“We would like to extend heart felt sympathy to his family of Mr McCook,” Wilks added before an appreciative crowd inside the National Stadium before going on to thank those who have aided the development of the meet over the years.

“Thank you to those we have contributed to the success of the Gibson Relays over the years,” Wilks stated. “To the sponsors, I would like to say a big thank you for continuing to support us through these very difficult times.”

“We thank all the fans who have stayed with us over the years and continue to make the Gibson Relays the special meet that it is,” Wilks continued.
