Regional Local Govt Conference Underway In Mobay |
Representatives from a number of Caribbean countries are currently meeting in Montego Bay to formulate a strategic approach to strengthening local government in the region.
The five-day Regional Local Government Consultation and Conference (RLGCC) agenda will include discussions on human resource management and its effectiveness in local governance. The conference also includes training sessions and discussions on a range of related topics and issues under the theme: ‘Enhancing local governance in the Caribbean’. Project Manager in the Local Government Reform Unit, Clive Edwards, in his presentation on May 27, said that human resource management has a direct relation to performance output of the organization and its sustainability. With this in mind, he added, effective human resource management in local government is critical to achieving positive impact on how it is perceived and sustained. He noted that as the Caribbean representatives meet, with a view to taking yet another step towards the formulation of a Regional Policy and Cooperation Framework on Local Government, it is important to recognize some key facts. Chief among them is the fact that the development of a regional local government system requires the emergence of a cadre of skilled, competent practitioners, possessing the abilities and skills to respond to the demands of best practices in local government administration.
