Who Will Win JCDC's Gospel Song Contest? PDF Print E-mail

Gospel Music is ‘Big Tings’ in Jamaica and the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC) recently launched the 2008 Jamaica Gospel competition under the theme ‘One God, One Family.

The launch marked the 21st staging of one of their most popular events that is not only a sure ticket seller but one that has been the catalyst for many a career. The gospel competition was introduced by the JCDC in 1987 and quickly became a staple through which original songs became popular and huge talent was unearthed and showcased. The final show is expected to be, as they have in the past, exciting and full of great performances.

This year again, young and not so young, but all very talented performers have  stepped up to share their message of love and the ever comforting satisfaction of having a relationship with God, as they compete for the title of the 2008 Gospel winner come Saturday July 26 at the National Indoor Sport Centre. Over 250 auditions were seen since the start of the year until, the numbers were whittled down to the final ten.

At the launch, the finalists had their taste of stardom as they were invited to perform along with 2007 winner Garfield Reid. The top ten for 2008 are Andrew Dixon with his entry ‘God is My Refuge; Deneese Wright with ‘No Condemnation; Tarshea Williams and ‘Satan You Lose Again’; Ovando Levy with “I know A Friend’; Rohan Clarke with ‘By Faith’; Kereen Gregory with ‘God Is’; Sushann Holmes and ‘This Your Child’; Girvon Moore with ‘Jamaica Needs to Change’; Minister Treasure with ‘Let Us Pray’ and Gamel Grant with ‘Remember Heaven’.

This year’s theme ‘One God, One Family’ resonated loudly with the Minister of Information, Culture, Youth and Sports Olivia ‘Babsy’ Grange who stressed the importance of gospel music as a vehicle for positive social transformation in this country. “Many of you are too young to know but in 1980 we started to organise events including a gospel festival. There were many doubting Thomases but we persevered.

It was part of a movement to reach out to the various denominations. We have come along way and with all of the people sharing the gospel music today, Jamaica is in good hands.” The public will be given an opportunity to get to know each artiste and vote for them through a special television series ‘Gospel Vibe, Jamaican style’ featuring all ten which will air on CVM TV starting in June.
