T&T's Walcott wins historic gold medal in javelin PDF Print E-mail

Trinidad and Tobago won its second Olympic gold medal in its history on Saturday in the Men's Javellin Throw.

This is the first ever gold medal for a Caribbean athlete in a field event at the Olympics and the first for the western hemisphere in decades.

Keshorn Walcott age nineteen, now joins the ranks of Hasely Crawford, after whom is named the national and largest stadium in Port of Spain.

Walcott, the world junior champion, threw a national record 84.58 meters with his second attempt and nobody improved on the mark for the remainder of the final.

Walcott was surprised by his accomplishment.

"I'm surprised I even made the final. I just went out there to relax and enjoy it, and it worked for me. It means everything to me. This is what it's all about. I just train my hardest and try to enjoy every time I come out."

Oleksandr Pyantnytsya of Ukraine was second with a throw of 84.51 and Antti Ruuskanen of Finland took third.

Two-time defending champion Andreas Thorkildsen of Norway finished sixth.
