Wolmer's make it three straight in sprint relay

WOLMER'S BOYS wrote their names in the Penn Relays record book on yesterday's final day of competition at the 118th staging of the meet.

The Heroes Circle-based school joined Kingston College as the only schools to win the Championship of America sprint relay three years in a row. Kingston College won the event 1964-66.

The Wolmer's quartet of Raheem Robinson, Odean Skeen, Jermaine Fyffe and Yanick Hart clocked 40.34 seconds to make a successful defence of their title.

Jamaican teams swept the top-three spots as Jamaica College (40.57) and Herbert Morrison Technical (41.03) finished second and third, respectively.

Coach David Riley was a very pleased man after the victory.

"The feeling is great and the school has now gone down in history and I am extremely pleased as we came out here to accomplish the win and they did so despite not winning all season. We found the right chemistry for this meet," said Riley, who spoke highly of young Robinson who started the race.

Munro win

Munro College, led by a brilliant 45.8 seconds anchor leg by Delano Williams, won the 4x400m in 3:11.91 to retain the title they won for the first time last year. Other members of the team were Ifeanyi Oiuonye, Senoj-j Givans and Herbert Thomas. Kingston College were second in 3:13.3, Manchester High fourth in 3:14.59, Calabar fifth in 3:14.77 and St Elizabeth Technical seventh in 3:19.65.

It was indeed a good day for Wolmer's as earlier they picked up a win in an individual event as Christoff Bryan, who celebrated his 16th birthday two days earlier, got a perfect gift as he won the high jump final with a best of 2.12m. Calabar High's Damar Robinson finished second with 2.06m.

In the Small schools consolation 4x100m final, St Jago High (41.89)) and Calabar High (42.29) finished second and third, respectively, as Junipero Serra out of California won the event in 41.82.

Kingston College were the best-placed Jamaican team in the boys' 4x800m final. They finished second in 7:40.52 with Holmwood Technical ending up third in 7:45.57. Westfield, out of Virginia, won the event in 7:39.73.

Individual win

Kingston College's Clive Pullen also picked up an individual win, capturing the long jump with a leap of 7.32m. His teammate Keneil Grant was fourth with 7.07m.

It was a good day for the University of Technology as they picked up three wins in the College section. Their first win came in the 4x200m Championship of America as the quartet of Jacques Harvey, Nicholas Watson, Denard Coote and Julian Forte won in 1:21.71 to turn back Texas A and M University (1:22.85) and University of South Carolina (1:23.24). Minutes later, Harvey returned to capture the men's college 100-metre final in 10.26 seconds. This followed up on the win in the women's college 100m by Carrie Russell in 11.41.

World Championships representative, Andrew Riley was victorious in the Men's College 110-metre hurdles as competing for the University of Illinois he won in 13.55 seconds. The vastly improved Hasle Parchment, representing the University of the West Indies, was second in 13.61.
