STING promoter claims Beenie Man will show PDF Print E-mail

The head organizer of the popular Dancehall stage show, STING, has high hopes for his product this time around; bringing it back to basics.

Isaiah Laing, head of Supreme Promotions, gave an interview on CVMTV’s OnStage this past Saturday where he outlined the events that will take place at STING 2011, scheduled to take place on December 26. The 28th edition of STING features a “Rumours of War” theme where several Dancehall acts are scheduled to engage in lyrical clashes. This marks a stark contrast from STING 2010 when no clashes were set and internationally-acclaimed Dancehall artistes, Mavado and Vybz Kartel were notable absentees; triggering the lowest turnout in the show’s history.

Laing conceded that not having Kartel and Mavado at STING last year hurt his product while claiming that the show’s change from its clash nature caused it to lose some credibility. However, Laing intimated that several artistes approached him to engage in clashes as an effort to revive the show’s atmosphere.

According to Laing, the show’s first clash will engage finalist from the STING Face-Off Wednesdays weekly competition that’s been held at Club Riddim over recent months. Following that, former Magnum Kings & Queens of Dancehall stalwarts, Hurricane and Specialist face offfollowed by Deva Bratt vs Iyara, Tony Matterhorn vs. Twin of Twins then Kiprich vs. Merciless.

However, the much anticipated clash between Dancehall legends, Beenie Man and Bounty Killer is seemingly in jeopardy after Beenie implied that he would not perform at STING 2011 unless Laing apologizes for recent comments he made during a television interview. According to Laing, he said nothing offensive about Beenie Man.

“I did not say anything about Beenie Man. I said things about him to big him up..If he thinks I’m dissing him, then I’m sorry Beenie Man, you want me to apologize? Come and do the show for the people. It’s not my show anymore. This is now an institution for the world,” Laing said.

When OnStage host, Winford Williams implied that Laing still had to time to change Beenie’s mind, the Supreme Promotions head guaranteed that Beenie will appear at the show; hopeful that he and Bounty will clash.

“I know he’s gonna be coming to the show. Trust me, he will be there,” Laing said.

Meanwhile, Laing revealed during the interview that the aforementioned Vybz Kartel was slated to perform at STING 2011 prior to his incarceration on drug and subsequent murder charges in September. According to Laing, a clash between Kartel and long-time rival, Aidonia was close to finalization prior to his arrest.

“We would be having a clash from him (Kartel). Him and Donia was slated to go down enuh.  We discussed that before he got nabbed….The price was a bit high but we were gonna do it,” Laing claimed.

STING 2011 will feature an early morning performance from Mavado, scheduled to place at 1:45 a.m. Also that night, several other segments are on the cards including the Young Generals segment featuring breakthrough artistes, Popcaan, Jahvinci amongst others while the Bad Rastas segment highlights prominent Dancehall/Reggae acts such as I-Octane, Khago, Teflon, I-Wayne and Fantan Mojah amongst others.

A Generation Next segment will feature young, emerging acts such as Lisa Hyper, Raine Seville, Ikaya, Tommy Lee and more.
