STING still on, Shaggy and Friends could be in jeopardy PDF Print E-mail

The recently announced General Elections in Jamaica could cause a flux within the entertainment industry given that it’s scheduled for the final week of 2011.

Jamaican Prime Minister, Andrew Holness announced during a rally in Mandeville on Sunday night that the 16th General Elections will take place on December 29; smacked in the middle of Christmas and New Year’s celebrations. The upcoming elections will occur during the period regarded by many as the busiest event period of any calendar year.

STING 2011, one of the annual events somewhat affected by this major political event, has been scheduled to take place on its usual date of December 26. Despite concerns over safety at the prominent Dancehall stage show given the high tensions that typically accompany elections, STING’s main promoter, Isaiah Laing stated in a radio interview on Tuesday that the show will go on as planned. Additionally, Laing claimed that the elections might enhance STING’s popularity and atmosphere this time round.

Meanwhile, Shaggy’s popular, perennial charity event, Shaggy and Friends could be in jeopardy as a result of the impending elections. The all-star stage show, dedicated to raising money for the Bustamante Hospital for Children in Kingston, is scheduled to take place on December 30, a day after the elections. Promoters of the Shaggy and Friends concert, Solid Agency have yet to publicly comment regarding the show’s status.

Director of Communications at the Jamaica Constabulary Force, Karl Angell stated during a radio interview on Tuesday that a meeting would take place addressing the issue of elections and how they could affect the status of all major events during the holiday season.

Several Dancehall observers have implied that police presence at parties and mass gatherings during this time will increase; possibly causing the early ending of events.
