Powell, Blake battle again PDF Print E-mail

Asafa Powell, world leader in the 100m event so far this season, will prepare for a rematch of sorts when he faces compatriots Yohan Blake and Nesta Carter at the two-day Aviva London Diamond League meet, which begins at Crystal Palace today.

Coming from behind for a victory over Blake and a strong field at the Jamaica National Senior Championships, Powell has gone even farther in silencing critics since then. He has looked in fantastic form and will be hoping to continue that brilliant run. In fact, with Bolt yet to find his best form many have picked Powel to win in Daegu, and tomorrow's meet will be an acid test, as Blake and Carter will be a handful, while the United States' Mike Rodgers will be hoping for an upset.

Blake, with a season-best 9.95 seconds, will hope to give Powell something to think about. Carter, who nearly upstaged Bolt the last time they raced, is also a live threat and could go faster than his season-best 9.90 seconds, in an event which could produce a world-leading time.

Four-point lead

Jamaica will also be well represented in the women's 400 metres hurdles, with Diamond League leader Kaliese Spencer, Melaine Walker and Ristananna Tracey down to compete. Spencer, who has been the best Jamaican so far this season in the event, will be hoping to stretch her four-point lead over the Czech Republic's Zuzan Hejnova.

The last time Hejnova raced the Jamaicans at the Paris St Denis meet, only a few weeks ago, she won in an impressive world-leading time of 53.24 seconds, Spencer was second, Walker fifth and Tracey seventh.

Kenia Sinclair and Jermaine Gonzales, fresh off their impressive wins a week ago at the Stockholm Diamond League meet, will be hoping for repeat performances in their events. Sinclair has a weaker field than last week in the women's 800 metres, and will be hoping to maintain her lead in the Diamond League series.

On the other hand, Gonzales, who raced to a season-best 44.69 seconds a week ago, will be hoping to maintain his lead despite the presence of the likes of Bahamian Chris Brown and Grenada's Kirani James, who will make his Diamond League debut in the event.

Three other Jamaicans will be involved in individual action today. Dwight Thomas will compete in the men's 110 metres hurdles, while Aleen Bailey and Sherone Simpson will compete in the women's 200 metres. Also on will be the women's 4x100 metres relay, where Jamaica will field a team against the United States and The Bahamas.
