Mullings clocks 9.80 in Prefontaine win PDF Print E-mail

STEVE MULLINGS bested his world leading time and personal best with a run of 9.80 seconds in winning the men's 100 metres at the Nike Prefontaine Classic in Euegene, Oregon today, June 4.

Mullings time was 0.09 faster than his previous world leading time and PB of 9.89, clocked in Clermont, Florida on May 21.

Michael Rodgers of the United States was second in 9.85, among a field where six of eight sprinters finished sub-10 seconds.

Jamaicans Nesta Carter in 9.92 and Michael Frater in 9.94 finished third and fifth respectively.

In the women's race Carmelita Jeter also ran a world leading time of 10.70, 0.16 faster than second place finisher and fellow American, Marshevet Myers.

Jamaicans Kerron Stewart, Shelly-Ann Fraser and Sherone Simpson finished third, four and fifth in times of 10.87, 10.95 and 11.00 respectively.

While Fraser will be disappointed in finishing so far behind Jeter, her two compatriots had the satisfaction of recording season best times.

The men's and women's races were wind-aided by speeds of +1.6 and +2.0 metres per second respectively.
