Kingston Pon Di River to show the city's other side PDF Print E-mail

With one of its many aims being to deviate from the concrete jungle imagery that many persons have of the nation's capital, Kingston Pon Di River was launched.

At a 'baby' Boone Hall Oasis at the Spanish Court Hotel on Tuesday, organisers Dynamic Event Services (DES) sold the event to those present telling why they believe the event was capable of sending a different view of the hustle-and-bustle city to others locally and internationally.

This the organisers explained, could be achieved through using a combination of literature and nature.

The event which is to take place on May 29 at Boone Hall Oasis in Stony Hill, St Andrew, is a literary arts festival which will include aspects of the visual, performing and culinary arts - all under one umbrella.

Part of the proceeds from the event is slated to go toward aiding in the restoration of The Ward Theatre.

Calabash, a similar festival, came to an end after 10 years, out of that Kingston Pon Di River was born.

Appeal to the senses

The organisers did not seek to replace the event, however, but offer their version, opting not to go to Calabash's Treasure Beach, St Elizabeth venue, but to the Boone Hall Oasis where the soothing flow of the river and the picturesque, natural surroundings will appeal to the senses.

They want to show the rest of the world that Kingston is also a destination for fun and relaxation.

The organisers have promised to torture patrons with good food, music and poetry. A taste of what to expect at Kingston Pon Di River was given through a saxophone piece by Fred Robertson and a poetry piece from Shaniese Watson - both Ardenne High School students.

Janet Silvera, managing partner of DES, also noted that there is much young talent to be included on the Kingston Pon Di River line-up and she went further to describe it as a wholesome event for the family.

Kelly Magnus, author of the popular Little Lion series of books will also be at the event to offer readings for children.

Kingston Pon Di River's overseas attraction was also taken into consideration as they are anticipating that persons from overseas would come to support the event.

Several well-known socialites will be taking part in the readings. Among them are, Mexican Ambassador Leonora Rueda, United States Ambassador Pamela Bridgewater, actor Paul Campbell, Aloun Assamba and Totlyn Oliver.

The master of ceremonies of the event will be Amina Blackwood-Meeks, who will be assisted by Karen Harriott.
