Additional Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting Vehicle for NMIA

A contract valued at US$1.14 million has been awarded to Oshkosh Corporation in the United States (US), for the supply of one aircraft rescue and firefighting vehicle for the Norman Manley International Airport (NMIA).

This was disclosed by Minister with responsibility for Information, Telecommunication and Special Projects, Hon. Daryl Vaz, during the weekly post-Cabinet press briefing, held at Jamaica House on July 28.

"Currently there are three such pieces of equipment at NMIA, which is the minimum required for the Category nine level of the firefighting capacity at which the airport should be, based on the largest aircraft normally used in the aerodrome and the fuselage width," he said.

The Minister noted that with the NMIA at the minimum and there being no standby Aircraft Rescue Fire Fighting Vehicle (ARFFV), the consistency in maintaining the required standard is compromised when any of these vehicles have any minor defects, breakdowns or undergoes scheduled maintenance.
