The Kitchen Bitch |
Unlike what some of yuh might think. Did you know that the good ole kitchen bitch was a small oil lamp used in the olden days that consisted of a tin can filled with kerosene oil with a cloth wick, and a handle attached.
The kitchen bitch was also called the 'cowgut' in some parts of Jamaica. It doesn't have a shade like regular lamps and was probably called so because it was mainly used in the kitchen which was a separate room from the house in the old days.
In 1973 the kitchen bitch was selected by JAMAL - the Jamaica Association for the Advancement of Literacy - as its symbol, a reflection of its motto 'Lighten Our Darkness'.
