More Haiti earthquake survivors found PDF Print E-mail

While there is decreasing hope of finding survivors of Tuesday’s earthquake, US rescuers are reporting that 10 more people were pulled alive from the rubble yesterday.

The US Agency for International Aid (USAID) says this represents the largest number of rescues in a single day in decades of earthquake search and rescue efforts.

Media reports have also indicated that close to 100 people have been pulled out alive from the debris of collapsed buildings by international search and rescue teams.

Some 43 international teams, comprising 1,739 rescue workers and 161 dogs, have already searched 60 of the worst affected areas hit by the earthquake.

The leading US general in Haiti, Lieutenant General Ken Keen, says up to 200,000 people may have died from the effects of the earthquake.

More than 70,000 people have already been buried.

There has also been increased reports of violence and looting as survivors are forced to fend for themselves.

The European Union in addition to pledging EU$420 million says its also discussing deploying a security mission to help maintain law and order.
