Milton George - Self Taught Jamaican Artist PDF Print E-mail

Milton George was born in 1939 in Manchester, Jamaica and lived and worked in St Catherine, Jamaica. He attended the Jamaica School of Art part time but still essentially self-taught. His repertoire is an excellent example of the creative imagination that is the bedrock of Jamaica’s cultural landscape.

Since 1969, his artistry has enriched numerous exhibitions in Jamaica, the USA, Latin America and Europe whether through the National Gallery’s Annual National Exhibition, 'Three Decades of Jamaican Painting' in which he participated from 1977 to 2003; the Commonwealth Institute, London England, ‘Three Decades of Jamaican Painting (1971); ‘Generations of Jamaican Art’ in Montreal, Canada, 1969.

Milton George’s paintings have also been featured in numerous publications including Modern Jamaican Art, (Ian Randle Publishers), Redemption Songs: The Self-Taught Artists of Jamaica, (Diggs Gallery Publication); Revue Noire magazine; and Art Today, (Phaidon Press).

Mr George’s style, described as autobiographical expressionism, has greatly contributed to the continuation of the Jamaican artistic tradition. Milton George died on March 31, 2008
