Pantomime Co stages Freedom fe Who? PDF Print E-mail

Emancipation weekend is just around the corner and with it comes the return of the LTM National Pantomime Company's annual Tribute to the Ancestors.

After 10 years of staging Augus Mawnin, a work devoted to the spirit of the enslaved who survived the Middle Passage to write an important chapter in Jamaican history, the company introduced another feature last August. It took the form of a mixture of songs, dance, discussion and introduction of a new work in progress titled Freedom fe who?, scripted by Barbara Gloudon who, with Brian Heap wrote and helped to stage Augus Mawnin.

Freedom fe Who? will be staged in a week-end tribute to the ancestors, opening Friday, July 31 at the Little Little Theatre and continuing Saturday August 1 and Sunday, August 2. In addition to the drama accompanied by songs and dance, each show, which begins at 6:00 pm, will feature special guests who will be integrated into the action onstage, to share their vision of our journey from slavery to today. Members of the audience will be facilitated to share their views with the discussant also.

Last year's guests were Professors Rex Nettleford and Barry Chevannes. This year, the first night's guests will be Dr Clinton Hutton of the Department of Government, UWI and Douglas Orane, CEO of GraceKennedy, who recently visited Ghana.

On Saturday evening, Kim Marie Spence, researcher of CaPRI, the UWI-based social research agency and Ibo Cooper, noted musician-composer of the Jamaica School of Music will share their perspective on Emancipation.

On Sunday, the "guests" will be two talking drums, which will be "given voice" by master drummers Philip Supersad and Calvin Mitchell.

Every evening of the programme there will be "Taste Mout" with Jamaican delicacies such as potato 'pudden', coconut drops, ducknoo and ' chawklit tea'.

Tickets for the Emancipation weekend with the Pantomime Company are available at the Little Theatre.
