Jamaican Skier Competes Tomorrow

We don’t have snow but Jamaicans have already proven themselves to be good on ice. On Sunday Errol Kerr, the 22-year-old who will represent Jamaica in ski cross at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, Canada, will glide into action.

He will compete tomorrow at the Lake Placid Freestyle World Cup, scheduled for Whiteface Mountain, New York.

The Lake Placid event will be Kerr's second World Cup of the season. Kerr, who acquired a Jamaican passport last May, began practice yesterday and will move into the qualification round tomorrow, which is scheduled to begin at 9:45 a.m. and the finals on Monday at 11 a.m.

Richard Salm, Jamaica Ski Federation president, who will leave the island today for the competition, stated that he was confident Kerr would qualify.

"On the downside, there are a lot more people competing in ski cross compared to over a year ago. On the upside, he (Kerr) now has his own trainer, which he didn't have before.

"He is a lot stronger physically than he was a year ago and he has done a lot of dryland training," Salm said.

The United States-born Kerr, rated 24th in the world and a former member of the United States ski cross team, finished 30th among a field of 78 on January 5 at the first Federation Internationale de Ski (FIS) World Cup in St Johann, Austria.

"Jamaica has a good chance of global exposure and we need to kindle high interest so that we can see our flag flying in the snow in Vancouver in 2010," Salm added.

Lake Placid is located about five hours north of New York City and was the site of the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympic Games. The competition will air on NBC Television Network on Sunday, January 25, at 1:30 p.m.
