Seretse Small “We want Kingston to be known as the live music capital of the world” – the goal of Jamaica's Griot Music.
Griot Music, headed by the multi-talented Seretse Small, is building what it calls ‘Live Music Nation- an army of musicians who are going to redefine what it means to be Jamaican by changing the Jamaican music industry.” Seretse is excited and says whether you live in Kingston or are visiting, you will no longer have an excuse to stay home at night anymore. This follows hot on the heels of the success of the Griot Music Concert Series at Red Bones and Christopher's Jazz Cafe's Tuesday Night Live and Singer's Night on Thursday.
Live Music Nation is intended to nurture our young musicians in a safe atmosphere, while showcasing to all Jamaicans that we are a talented, intelligent, beautiful, passionate people, capable of great things. "What the success of Christopher's has taught us is that we have a huge pool of talented, young, trained musicians who are all eager to enter a new era in the Jamaican music industry."
A large part of this project is an investment in artist development. With over twenty years of experience as a musician, a career that spans the genres from jazz to dancehall, and has taken Seretse through the ranks from musician to teacher to CEO, Seretse has developed a process for his young musicians to follow in order to ready themselves for international status.
Seretse further explained, "Live Music Nation is a concept that Jamaica is ready for. There are so many people out there who have gotten into a habit of staying at home because the standard of Jamaican entertainment has fallen so badly or because the entertainment that's available isn't targeted at them. Live Music Nation is for everyone. It's good music, it's good fun and we intend to focus on venues that are very safe."
To solve the problem noted recently by the Prime Minister that Jamaica is a day time destination, Live Music Nation will also target tour companies. Griot Music will partner with tour companies to get the tourists to the venues and back to their hotels safely.
Griot Music is also working on hosting Global Battle of the Bands Jamaica 2008 and is inviting bands to call (946-2065) or email (
