The Jamaican Folk Singers will be staging its 2008 Concert Season, "Out of Many, One" from September 6-14 at the Little Theatre, Tom Redcam Avenue.

The Jamaican Folk Singers is a non-profit singing group which was formed in 1967 by Dr Olive Lewin. This concert season is intended to be the major fund-raiser for the group this year, with part proceeds going towards the entity's 2009 Summer School programme and part towards the Jamaica Library Service, an organisation with whom the group has been associated for over 13 years, through the donation of funds for the purchase of children's books for the country's libraries. Other organisations are involved, with part proceeds going towards various charities.

The season runs from September 6 - 14. Showtimes : Friday and Saturday at 8:00 pm and Sunday at 6:00 pm. Tickets are available at the Little Theatre, Tom Redcam Avenue; Music Mart, Twin Gates Shopping Centre and Monarch Pharmacy, Sovereign Centre.

"Out of Many, One" will take patrons down memory lane, remembering the slave ancestors, enjoying young love, and experiencing the ever powerful and spiritual Revival. The concert will feature Jamaican folk music, arranged by the group's founder, Dr Olive Lewin, folklorist and accomplished musician in piano, violin and composition.

This year, as the singers recognise Jamaica's diverse culture, there will be presentations by Spanish, Indian and Scottish performers.

A release stated that, "The experience to be had at a performance of this nature is unique, as there is a special spirit that is alive within the Jamaican Folk Singers, and a special love for Jamaica and its people and music. This keeps the group together and creates a bond, which is strengthened by the power of the music and helps keep alive our hope in Jamaica and the wonderful things we as a people have to offer."

The group has received funding from the CHASE Fund, which has recognised the contributions that the Jamaican Folk Singers has made to Jamaica's cultural development, and which recognises the need to help the group to continue to fulfil its mandate, as the Jamaican Folk Singers, proudly embraces its responsibility as an agent of cultural reproduction in Jamaica.
