Jamaican students in Cuba are to receive a 25% increase in their stipend from Jamaica.
The increase moves the students up from a stipend of US$100 monthly to US$125. The announcement was made in Parliament by Prime Minister Bruce Golding Originally students who were awarded scholarships through arrangements with the Peoples National Party and from local trade unions, as well as students engaged in a one year preparatory course prior to registration in their various disciplines, received no financial assistance from the government of Jamaica. There are 105 students falling in these categories. The Prime Minister mentioned that with the increase given, students under the arrangements of the PNP, trade unions and those in the one year preparatory course will now receive stipend payments. Mr. Golding further added that the financial decisions were in keeping with the promises he made to these students, when he visited them in Cuba, in May of this year. Under the bilateral technical assistance agreements between the governments of Cuba and Jamaica, the Cuban government provides tuition, accommodation and course related supplies, plus the Cuban equivalent to US$5 per month. |
