There is a Jamaican proverb “If yuh kyaan ketch kwaaku, yuh ketch him shut.” Such is the story of Usain Bolt’s father.
So in this case Usain Bolt is ‘Kwaaku’ and his father, mother and girlfriend represent the ‘shut’, i.e. shirt, which is one of the closest things to him. So if you want to get to an individual and you can’t, then you get to someone close to the person. This can be good in some cases and in some cases bad. Incidentally, Kwaku is the name given to a Wednesday-born male, among the Akan people. Here’s a good case. A major advertiser shows us at the house of a well known beauty to offer her a major contract. If she is not home and they happen to see her younger sister who is just as, if not more beautiful, little sister may get that contract. Or let’s say you have always wanted to do medicine, but you get squeamish at the site of blood. You may choose to become a researcher or the editor for the medical journal. Not quite Kwaaku, but close enough. Now the bad case. Your brother stole someone’s money. You are walking down the road one day and some guys beat you up. If they call you a thief, then perhaps it is a case of mistaken identity, but if they say while punching you “Teck dat fi yuh teefing bredda”, then you know that you are the ‘shut’ of your brother kwaaku. The following article story carried in the Gleaner below demonstrates how the ‘shuts’ around Usain Bolt are receiving attention, when fans don’t have access to Bolt as ‘kwaaku’ Usain Bolt’s Father Has become A Star Usain Bolt's new celebrity status has rubbed off on his father, Wellesley, who was mobbed by enthusiastic fans at the Bird's Nest, in Beijing, China. The senior Bolt, father of the world's fastest man and triple Olympic gold medallist, said he had to be rescued by Chinese police."The police had to come to get me," said Bolt, who was flown to the East Asian country courtesy of telecommunications firm, Digicel. Bolt, who had to be coerced into going to China because of his fear of flying, said: "Everyone wanted my autograph, the autograph of the father of the world champion."Laughing joyously as he exited the Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay, St James, yesterday morning, Bolt reminisced on his experience at the 2008 Olympics. And while he had to stave off fans, his son, who has become a sport icon, was hardly available to him."I only spoke with him (Usain) once because he was so busy and there were so many people around him."Last Monday, the senior Bolt was surprised when Digicel offered him a trip to China, insisting that he had to join his son, who celebrated his 22nd birthday last Thursday. Usain's mother, Jennifer Bolt, was already at the Olympics with the athlete's girlfriend, Mizicann Evans."I never imagined it would be so great. The atmosphere was nice and it was great going to all these places I would never have dreamt of," he said. Written by : janet.silvera source : www.gleanerjm.com |
