Mens 4 x 400, No Go For JA

Jamaica failed to medal in the men’s 4x400 metres. The team of Blackwood, Chambers, Ayre, Spence finished eighth.

The race  was won by the Americans who claimed the 4x400m men gold in dazzling Olympic record breaking style. The 400m Olympic gold and silver medallists LaShawn Merritt and Jeremy Wariner ran with Angelo Taylor and David Neville to win in 2:55.39secs.

The gold was never in doubt, with the Bahamas winning silver in 2:58.03 and the Russians getting bronze in 2:58.06. Britain's Andrew Steele, Rob Tobin, Michael Bingham, Martyn Rooney gave it their all but struggled in fourth.

It meant a relay double for the US following the women's 4x400m gold earlier on Saturday.  Briton Rooney, who ran an impressive leg in 43.80, said: "I came here for the medal but I'm gutted again. We just weren't good enough on the day."
