Bittersweet was the vibe in Half Way Tree on Friday, after the women’s and mens 4 x 100 metres relays.
The failed baton change of the Jamaican women, potentially cost us the golden opportunity to medal, but the men, with their astounding record breaking performance quickly provided a salve for some of the disappointment. Even as the screams and shouts of victory went up, there was a tinge of sorrow, because many persons were expecting Jamaica to secure gold medals in both events and up the country's overall gold medal tally to 7.
Not to be deterred, however, many still engaged in the hearty celebration of pot-cover-banging, flag-waving, road-blocking proportions. After all was said and done, and most of the working population had gone back to their various offices, a small crowd gathered to have their own little impromptu dance, complete with sound boxes blaring popular Movado tunes. On the other side of the road before the Transportation Centre, another crowd converged to watch newly-released artiste, Prestige dance and sing his new song: Olympic Feeling. Even the street people got involved in the celebration, dancing and jigging on the street-side with the merry crowd.
Vendors selling Jamaican merchandise and paraphernalia could be seen all over the road, and everything from clips to pins to bands and flags were up for sale for those who wanted to purchase a symbolic piece of history. While these celebrations were nothing in comparison to the chaotic cacophony that followed Usain's Bolt record-shattering performance in the 100 and 200 metre races, they proved that the Jamaican spirit was still alive and well, and that Jamaicans are still very much in tune with the Olympics. For the weekend, there will be parties aplenty ( you know we don’t even need a reason to party right?) Some of these will be well organized events with a gate charge, while others will be impromptu, street dances or house h parties, as together the nation celebrates the victories of the Olympics team. |
