It was sweet victory for America, and the sorry taste of defeat for Jamaica in the Olympics Men's 400m hurdles final.
From their clean starts, Americans Angelo Taylor (47.25 personal best), Kerron Clement (47.98s) and Bershawn Jackson (48.06s) swept first, second and third places in the event, leaving Jamaica's Danny McFarlane for fourth. Danny McFarlane McFarlane, who won silver at the Games in Athens, 2004, gave his all in this race, but had to settle for his season's best time of 48.30seconds, and no Olympic medal. The other Jamaican in this race, Markino Buckley, also put up a valiant effort, but could only manage to place ninth in a time of 48.60s.
Kenia Sinclair Earlier in the afternoon, Jamaica's Kenia Sinclair, also lost out on a medal opportunity in the Women's 800m finals. Sinclair, who remained in the top three for the first 600m of the event, weakened on the final stretch, and slowed down to place sixth in the event, way behind Kenya's Pamela Jelimo (1:54:87), who is also the world record holder, and Janeth Jepkesqui (1:56:07), who placed first and second respectively.
Sinclair and Markino Buckley were making their first Olympic appearances as juniors. Danny McFarlane is a veteran Jamaican athlete, who, according to sports commentator and Jamaican Olympic medallist, Grace Jackson, “has it in him” to continue to train and make a final comeback in the next Olympic Games. |
