JA's No-Medal Years
In all of Jamaica's relatively short history in the Olympics, there are several events that we have never won. There are even Olympics meets where we have never won medals (*gasp*).

While these dark moments are not as celebrated as our many victories, they do form a part of Jamaica's Olympics history.

Chat-Bout thinks that if you're going to tell the story, then you should tell the whole story. It pays to know exactly where the country is coming from to develop a fuller appreciation of the strides it has made over the years. So here's a list of some of the not-so-proud moments of Jamaica's Olympics history. Did you know .....

That in the 1956 Melbourne Olympics Games, AND the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, Jamaica did not win any medals at all? Not very many Jamaicans are aware that these two dark years exist in the country's Olympics history. It's obviously not something that will get noised all over television screens, but nevertheless it is true that there are two years that Jamaica did not manage to secure any medals in the Olympics at all. Thankfully, those years are very far behind us.

...That despite numerous attempts, Jamaica has never won the men's or women's 100m gold medal? That's right. With athletes like Merlene Ottey, Donald Quarrie, Herbert McKenley and a host of others, the 100m gold medal has somehow managed to elude Jamaica's grasp. With the agility and strength already displayed by the country's new crop of athletes, however, there are strong expectations that this statistic will be erased this year.

...That Jamaica has never won gold in the Women's 4x400m relays? This is an event that we have participated in at majority of our most recent Olympics meets. We have won the bronze (2004 Athens) and the silver (2000 Sydney) but we have never secured that gold. This falls on that list of events in which the nation hopes to 'bruk its ducks' at the 2008 Games in Beijing.

...That at the 1960 Rome Games, the 1968 Mexico City Games and the 1976 Montreal Games, Jamaica only won one medal? Lennox Miller gave the country its only medal in Mexico City and Montreal. In 1968, he won the 100m silver, and the following Olympic year, 1976, he won the bronze. This after the country was coming out of a drought when it won no medals at all at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. The Olympic year before that very bleak period (Rome 1960), Jamaica won one medal through George Kerr – a bronze in the men's 800m race. It was the country's first bronze.

Now you know where Jamaica is coming from in the Olympics. This should give you a much clearer understanding of the hard road we have traveled in order to be where we are now in the Olympics.

Jamaica has come from years of no-medals or single-medals to become a strong contender in sprint races, even striking out on new paths in swimming, cycling, and equestrian sports. Chat-Bout salutes the country for its perseverance.
