Jamaican trained nurses are in high demand all over the world and Jamaica now has a new nursing school to cater to the increased demand for training.
The Hyacinth Chen School of Nursing was recently opened at the Mandeville Campus of the Northern Caribbean University (NCU). The new facility has been made possible by a $257 million donation by Chairman of the National Commercial Bank (NCB), Michael Lee Chin. The new building will boast state-of-the-art facilities and is expected to accommodate some 800 nursing students, up from the 400 who were previously accommodated in the Department of Nursing at NCU. Vice President of Planning and Retention at the institution, Dr. Daniel Fider described the school as “special”, adding that the infrastructure and software will save a lot of time and enhance efficient teaching. He said it will have five modern labs which will require minimal human intervention. The labs are equipped with document cameras and any topic that an instructor touches on, a student can immediately go on the wireless internet system and do his or her research. Prior to the start of the new academic year, 20 freshmen will be awarded the NCB Foundation/NCU Inaugural Scholarships, valued at US$3,500 each. Source : www.jis.gov.jm |
