Jamaica's Olympics Firsts
In terms of our Olympics history, we ‘bruck wi ducks’ at the 1948 London Games, winning three medals: one gold and two silver.  Arthur Wint was the first Jamaican Olympic gold medalist, winning the men's 400m.

Another Jamaican, Herb McKenley, won the silver in that same event – a fitting initiation for the country into the Games. You can say that we 'cut our teeth' for the Olympics on gold.  Wint also won silver in the men's 800m that year. Arthur Wint Drive, the location of the National Indoor Sports Centre, the National Stadium & Arena, the Bustamante hospital for Children and the Edna Manley College for the Visual and performing Arts, was named in his honour.

Jamaica's first gold in a relay event was also the country's first time clocking a world record at the Olympics. The men's 4x400 relay quartet clocked a world

record 3:03.9 to stun the world into recognition of Jamaica's athletic talents. This was accomplished while the country was still young in the Olympics: at only Jamaica's second time participating in the Games at Helsinki in 1952. The relay team comprised Arthur Wint, Herb McKenley, Les Laing and George Rhoden. George Rhoden became the first Jamaican to earn two gold medals at a single Olympic Game as well.

Donald Quarrie gave Jamaica its first Olympic 200m gold medal in Montreal, 1976 Games, and just missed (by .01 second) a second gold medal in the 100m. At the 1980 Games, he won a bronze medal in the men's 200m. Quarrie proved that sprinters could be durable, with a career than spanned five Olympic Games.

Merlene Ottey was the first Jamaican female Olympic medalist. She won bronze in the 200m at the 1980 Moscow Games, putting Jamaican women on the map internationally as competitive sprinters.

David Weller was the first Jamaican to win an Olympic medal outside of Track and Field when he won a bronze medal for 1km cycling at the 1980 Moscow Games.

Jamaica's first sprint relay medal at the Olympic level was a silver in the men's 4x100m, won by a dynamic team (Donald Quarrie, Raymond Stewart, Albert Lawrence, and Gregory Meghoo) at the 1984 Los Angeles Games.

Winthrop Graham was the first Jamaican hurdler to won an Olympic medal, when he won the silver for the men's 400 metre hurdles at the 1992 Barcelona Games.

Deon Hemmings was the first Jamaican woman to win a gold medal at the Olympics (1996 Atlanta 400 metre hurdles). She was also the second Jamaican hurdler to win a medal.

James Beckford secured the island's first Olympic medal in a field event when he won silver in long jump at the 1996 Atlanta Games.

Jamaican women became a force to be reckoned with in sprint relays after the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games when they won silver in the 4x100m. The team comprised Tanya Lawrence, Veronica Campbell, Beverly McDonald and Merlene Ottey. Jamaican women also won their first 4x400 medal at this Game, when they secured third place (Sandie Richards, Catherine Scott-Pomales, Deon Hemmings, Lorraine Graham).

Jamaican women earned their first relay gold medal in the 4x100 (Veronica Campbell, Aleen Bailey, Sherone Simpson, Tanya Lawrence) at the 2004 Athens Games. Veronica Campbell, who also won gold in the 200m, became the second Jamaican to win two gold medals at a single Olympic Game.
