Jamaica's Olympics team is loaded with history-makers. We will be participating in several events for the first time, with hopeful athletes raring to go.
Whether or not they win medals, they will go down in our history books as the ones who opened the Olympics doors for other Jamaicans to compete in some non-traditional events. Join Chat-Bout as we big up the Jamaicans who will fly our flag high, planting roots in new sports for Jamaica. Dorian Scott: He will be the first Jamaican male to compete in Shot Put at the Olympic level. He has participated in this event at the Commonwealth level, and was the 2006 silver medalist. He also won the CAC Games gold medal in 2006 and the 2007 Pan-Am Games silver medal. His best distance is 21.45.
Zara Northover: Northover will be the second person to represent the island in the Shot Put at the Olympic level, the first being Kimberley Barrett in 2004. At only 24 years old, she has won the national event thrice, and has a personal best distance of 17:56metres. Do we foresee improvement as time goes on?
Madrea Hyman: The 3000m Steeplechase is being introduced to Olympics for the first time this year. And Madrea Hyman will be the first Jamaican to represent the country at the Olympics in that event. In addition, Hyman will also go down in international history as member of the first batch of Olympians to participate in the 3000m Steeplechase. She has won medals at the CAC Championships thrice, and has a personal best time of 9:27:21.
Samantha Albert: She will be the first Jamaican, and first Jamaican woman, to compete in Olympics Equestrian, opening new doors for Jamaicans to extend its Olympic reach past just Track & Field, Swimming and Cycling, into the heretofore uncharted waters of Equestrian. |
