Bolt, Jamaica break sprint relay record

Usain Bolt powered home to help Jamaica set a world record of 37.04 seconds in men's 4x100-mere relay Sunday at the world championships in Daegu, South Korea.

Nesta Carter led off the relay and handed to Michael Frater.

Yohan Blake, the 100 world champion following the disqualification of Bolt in the final, ran the third leg and handed to Bolt.

The Jamaicans were without one-time world record holder Asafa Powell, who was injured. They won by a whopping 1.16 seconds.

France finished second in 38.20 and Saint Kitts and Nevis took bronze in 38.49.

American sprinter Darvis Patton sprawled to the ground at the end of his third leg before even being able to hand the baton to double silver medallist Walter Dix. It appeared Patton made contact with Britain's third sprinter.

U.S. women take back relay title

The United States won the women's 4x100, with 100 gold medallist Carmelita Jeter running the final leg.

The Americans, who won the world title in 2005 and 2007, beat defending champion Jamaica down the stretch, winning in 41.56 seconds.

Jamaica was second in 41.70 and Ukraine took bronze in 42.51.

Bianca Knight ran the first leg and handed off to Allyson Felix, who won her record eighth world championship gold medal. Marshevet Myers ran the third leg and Jeter was last.

Semenya settles for silver

Caster Semenya failed to defend her 800-meter title at the world championships Sunday, faltering late down the finishing straight to allow Mariya Savinova of Russia get the gold.

Silver, however, was better than many expected as the South African showed glimpses of her powerful running that made her the dominating athlete over the distance two years ago.

Instead, Savinova added to Russia's gold medal haul after Tatyana Lysenko won the women's hammer throw, leaving it in a strong second place behind the United States.

Men's 5,000

Mo Farah of Britain held off Bernard Lagat of the United States to win.

Farah, who won silver in the 10,000 last weekend, won in 13 minutes, 23.36 seconds.

Lagat was second, 0.28 seconds back, while Imane Merga of Ethiopia took the bronze in 13:23.78.

Defending champion Kenenisa Bekele withdrew from the event after dropping out of the 10,000.

Men's triple jump

Christian Taylor of the United States won the men's triple jump at the world championships on Sunday, beating defending champion Phillips Idowu of Britain.

Another American, Will Claye, got bronze. Taylor jumped a world leading 17.96 metres for gold and held off Idowu, who finished with a leap of 17.77 metres. Claye jumped 17.50.

World indoor record holder Teddy Tamgho of France did not compete because of injury.

Women's hammer

Tatyana Lysenko of Russia won the women's hammer throw with a toss of 77.13 metres.

Betty Heidler of Germany, the 2007 champion, won her second straight silver medal with a toss of 76.06, and Zhang Wenxiu of China took bronze with 75.03.

Two-time world champion Yipsi Moreno of Cuba was fourth with a toss of 74.48, and defending champion Anita Wlodarczyk of Poland finished fifth with a throw of 73.56.
