Sponsored by the Embassy of China, the exhibition held some 54 photographs and photographic prints, of places such as Hong Kong, Yunnan, Tibet, Guizhou, Hunan, Beijing, Shanxi and Inner Mongolia. In between his images of landscape and buildings, rivers and rice fields, were photographic studies of children.

The richness of China’s geography was vividly displayed in both city and countryside. It made for interesting viewing with picturesque settings of rural China featuring largely untouched land. In sharp contrast also were cosmopolitan city life pieces, with all the man-made edifices of strength and power. Curator of the Mutual Gallery Gilou Bauer said that she was pleased to have been able to accommodate Lui’s work. “When I looked at the images I was totally enthralled by the quality, beauty and context of his work and I readily agreed to work with him.”

She noted that from a large pool of images they selected the ones used in the exhibition,  and upon arrival at the gallery they realized the images were so diverse that they decided to use a map of China to categorise them by region. This allowed them to follow his photographic path through the countryside, in order to have the images bear a sense of order.”

Large canvas prints fetched $16,000 and the smaller matte prints went for $8,000. 100% of the sales were donated to the Chinese Home for the Aged and the Chinese Cultural Association. A physician by Profession, Kai Meng Lui is one of only two Master Class photographers and a former president of the Colour Photographic Club. He has won numerous medals in Jamaica National festival competitions. An avid traveler to the Far East, he is also past president of the Chinese Cultural Association.
