'Kingston Calling' Launched in London PDF Print E-mail

A new album featuring some of Jamaica's finest artistes, including Toots Hibbert, Anthony B and CeCile doing covers and interpretations of some great British Indie, Punk and Britpop songs, had its official launch on October 6, at the Jamaican High Commission, in London .

The album, 'Kingston Calling', is produced by Paul Hussey, who said that the album is a tribute to the strong links between Reggae Music and the British Punk music.

"I have strong links to Jamaica and Jamaican music and I also have strong connections to England and English music. I have worked extensively with reggae music in Jamaica and I also worked in England with 'Indi' music, so for me it was natural to put both music forms together," Mr. Hussey said.

He added that he also wanted to use 'Kingston Calling' to introduce Reggae music and Jamaican artistes to a new generation of music lovers who, while being familiar with Reggae music, did not know reggae artistes.

"I hope that it (Kingston Calling) will introduce a new generation here in the UK to Reggae musicians. They already now Reggae music, but they are not familiar with the Jamaican musicians," he said.

The launch featured Mr. Hussey playing selected tracks from the album, including title track, 'Kingston Calling' by Anthony B and Toots Hibbert, an interpretation of the London Calling by the Clash. There was also a live performance by Barry Dread, who did his version of the Rakes' 'Terror'.

'Kingston Calling' made its UK debut on BBC radio One's Zane Lowe's show and in Jamaica it has been featured by Ron Muschette on Irie FM.
