Commonwealth Games 2010: Caribbean Facts PDF Print E-mail

With the 2010 Commonwealth Games in full swing, we look at some interesting facts for each Caribbean nation competing in Delhi.

 

Anguilla

Games fact: Anguilla have sent a handful of athletes to each of their three Games, competing in athletics and cycling.

 

Antigua and Barbuda

Games fact: Former Prime Minister Lester Bryant Bird was a high jumper of some repute, winning bronze at the 1959 Pan-American Games.

 

Bahamas

Games fact: All but one of the Bahamas' 25 medals have come in track and field. The exception was a bronze in boxing in 1982.

 

Barbados

Games fact: Their medal haul includes gold in weightlifting in 1958 and athletics at the 1998 Games in Kuala Lumpur with a boxing bronze being their sole reward in Melbourne in 2006.

 

Belize

Games fact: Belize has been represented in athletics, boxing, cycling, shooting and weightlifting.

 

Bermuda

Games fact: Bermuda's solitary gold so far came in the 1990 high jump when Nicky Saunders triumphed. They have failed to medal at the last two Games.

 

British Virgin Islands

Games fact: British Virgin Islands have been represented in athletics, cycling and squash.

 

Cayman Islands

Games fact: Their only medal so far came in 2002 when Kareem Streete-Thompson won bronze in the men's high jump.

 

Dominica

Games fact: After a break of 24 years, Dominica has appeared in the last four Commonwealth Games.

 

Grenada

Games fact: Grenada won their first Commonwealth Games medal in 2006 when Alleyne Francique took silver in the men's 400m.

 

Guyana

Games fact: Guyana's only medal in the last four Games came courtesy of Aliann Pompey, who won the women's 400m in 2002.

 

Jamaica

Games fact: Jamaica have won medals in each of the 14 Games they have entered, including a best-ever haul of 22 medals (10 golds) in 2006.

 

Montserrat

Games fact: Montserrat's participation in the Commonwealth Games has so far been limited to the men's 100m and 200m and men's high jump.

 

St Kitts and Nevis

St Kitts' Kim Collins made his mark in 2004
Sprinter Kim Collins won the islands' first-ever Commonwealth medal and major title in 2002. The government released a set of postage stamps honouring him and named a main road after him.

 

St Lucia

Games fact: Medalled in Manchester at the sixth time of asking when Dominic Johnson won bronze in the pole vault.

 

St Vincent and the Grenadines

Games fact: Attended four Games from 1958 as St Vincent, winning bronze in 1970 and a gold in 1974 - both in boxing. They have since competed with the Grenadines, without medalling.

 

Trinidad and Tobago

Games fact: Their only gold medal since 1966 came when Ato Boldon won the men's 100m in 1998.

 

Turks and Caicos Islands

Games fact: All four appearances have been with all-male teams.
