Jamaicans warned not to molest crocodiles

In a release on Friday, NEPA said that it has become aware that there are persons who are attempting to catch crocodiles, "as a means of gaining national prominence."

"While these animals are generally docile, they can become aggressive, if provoked. As a result, the public is advised not to molest crocodiles, at any time," the release said.

"The public is further advised that, under the Wildlife Protection Act (WLPA), killing or capturing crocodiles is an offence punishable either by 12 months imprisonment, a fine of $100,000, or both. Exercise extreme caution when using areas close to swamps, wetlands and/or gullies, which are natural habitats for these animals. Avoid bathing in or near areas where crocodiles live," the release added.

It also stated that in event that there are heavy rains, it is also likely that the animals will move with flood waters.
