In addition to its offering of sun, sand and sea Jamaica and wonderful people Jamaican culture, heritage and history continue to provide an excellent reason to visit Jamaica. The Spanish had control of Jamaica for close to 150 years, and they surely did not give it up willingly ... who would, after all Jamaica so nice.
Now Spanish hotels are springing up all over Jamaica’s north coast, and the Spanish tourists, Mr. Columbus having been the first, are coming back. The Spanish Embassy in Jamaica and the Spanish Jamaican Foundation are collaborating with the Jamaica National Heritage Trust on the Jamaica Heritage Trial project, designed to provide insights into Jamaican history through the creation of trails and the proper signing of landmarks, detailing Jamaican history and heritage in relation to Spanish occupation. The first heritage signboard, at the Seville Heritage Park in St. Ann, offers an insight into the historical relationship between Jamaica and Spain.
She thanked Spanish Ambassador Jesus Silva for the interest and support of the Spanish government, and said the heritage trail project signified the kind of work that is necessary to enhance Jamaica’s tourism product. She noted that the idea of a heritage trail provides Jamaicans and visitors the opportunity to re-visit or discover the various paths taken in our development. It allows for the discovery of ancestral pride as well as for the negotiation of the process that can lead to re-connections with the past. The signage for the Spanish Heritage Trail is being funded by a group of Spanish investors in Jamaica, including Bahia Principe, Calatel, Execllence Group, Iberostar, MBJ Airports, Palladium Hotels and Resorts, RIU Hotels and Resorts and Seawind Key.
