The Universal Negro Improvement Association founded by national hero Marcus Mosiah Garvey in 1914 is alive and growing in 2009.

All proceeds from the event go towards remedial classes for street youths, dispensary and computer skills centre, agriculture re-socialisation programme, consulting centre for abused children, home for handicapped & HIV children and training for young women in nursing to give back to their communities.
On the night of the event the association will be acknowledging and awarding great people in Jamaica who have given their time and energy unselfishly towards helping, developing, educating and inspiring the less fortunate.
"The awardees have gone unrecognised, but have demonstrated, however, that they stand for the principles and ideas that Marcus Garvey promoted. The Awards Ceremony is a night to celebrate; Self Respect, Self Reliance and Empowerment," a release from the association said.
The UNIA will embark on this charitable journey on the birthday of Jamaica's first national hero with performances by Queen Ifrica, Warrior King, Perfect, Lymie Murray, M'Bassikolo Jam African Ensemble Garvey Selecta, Dj Talia from Irie FM.
Government agencies and African embassadors have been invited as special guests while an impressive food selection of Moroccan, Jamaican, Egyptian, South African Wines and Nigerian are added features of the event.
